Italianiron & BritIron Classics Maximize Performance with Hand Held Dyno & SmartCarb Flat Slides

We want to thank Michael Arnott for selecting us to be testers of his Hand Held Dyno system by OEM Digital. It has been interesting to see how well this system works and how well it works in conjunction with our SmartCarb flat-slide carbs. We found that despite believing that we are very good at setting up our SmartCarb's, Michael's system showed us that with his system that we could even more effectively "dial-in" the performance of SC2's. This is despite the fact that SC2's are already very easy to set up!!  We have already installed a Hand Held Dyno kit on our Ducati 750 Pantah racer build and will offer our findings once we have that project up on her wheels. This is one of the exciting aspects of being involved in the world of vintage Italian & British racing motorcycles that we can be of service with a cross section of race quality products and services. Thanks to Michael Arnott and his team for developing and sharing his Hand Held Dyno by OEM Digital as it is a superb piece of kit!! We also found this kit to be incredibly easy to install. Michael's installation and wiring diagrams are provided with the kit and we also found them extremely easy to follow. Further, those instructions and diagrams are very "user-friendly" to the installer regardless of their level of experience and skill. Our 1978 Ducati 900 ss MHR Bevel Drive engine loves this kit and in combination with our SmartCarb flat slide carbs, we are already impressed with the improvement in the engine's performance. We also had a bit of fun following the data relayed on the digital dash!! According to another tester who commented, and rightly so, that this Hand Held Dyno kit is reminiscent in its operation as something from the "black arts" when viewing the rev counter or the other diagnostics of a vintage Ducati Bevel Drive engine and all on a modern Smart Phone! What a package!! As mentioned earlier, we also found that the use of the Hand Held Dyno was also very helpful in "fine-tuning" our favourite flat slide carburetor, the SmartCarb with its proven record of successful race performances in the 2 stroke and the 4 stroke world. 

At Italianiron & Britiron Classics, we have been able to confirm the factory's claims of the technical benefits of the SmartCarbs as providing a 30% saving in fuel consumption, 6 to 14%improvement in HP, adaptability to altitude and other atmospheric changes, ease of adjustment and 80% less in hydrocarbon emissions. We have also found that once we have set-up our SmartCarb2's, that there has been no need to "fiddle" with those settings. Also worthy of note is the "real-world" benefit experienced when riding up and down our Sonoran mountain roads with no impact to our Ducati 900 ss MHR engine maintaining linear power delivery. That has not been my experience when racing with other brands of carburetors such as DellOrto's, Keihin's or Mikuni's. There was also no need to adjust these carbs at different elevations as they are self-adjusting. SC2's are truly remarkable!! Shown below is one of our videos that shows the Hand Held Dyno display with the engine running. The limitation of the I Phone and smart phone technology in general can be found when the microphones are attempting to record the glorious exhaust note of a Ducati bevel drive engine and especially since we run a 2:1 competition exhaust. However, what is remarkable is how the app on the I Phone so effectively integrates with the Hand Held Dyno and communicates the additional analytics. We will work on more videos as we work on both this Ducati 900 ss bevel drive engine and the Ducati 750 Pantah engine. 

There are numerous additional benefits and technical reasons for using SmartCarbs on your vintage racer or streetbikes which I have written about. One other significant benefit in using the SmartCarb is how our engines react on start up after sitting. As I have twelve Ducati's and Norton's, there are some machines that unfortunately do sit idle more than I would like. With the bikes that use DellOrto's, for example, if the bike sits too long, I have to rebuild the carbs after a thorough cleaning. However, I also acknowledge that the quality of most pump gas is poor worldwide. The result is not the same for our Ducati or Norton Commando engines that are equipped with the SmartCarbs. Those bikes start-up almost always on the first or second kick after sitting!!
