Using our TT Kits to Build a Ducati TT 1000

Posted by Scot Wilson on Jun 29th 2021

At  Italianiron/BritIron Classics, let us "Fuel Your Race Passions" is not just a slogan but a commitment, whether you are building a vintage TT racer for competition, a Ducati F1 vintage street bike or a classic Norton CommandoDominator or Manx. Internationally, the sport of Vintage Motorcycle Racing has developed a new race series for the Ducati 1100 cc and Ducati 1000 cc engines that must use carburetors. That fact is no problem, as we are dealers for the SmartCarb flat-slides that we have found to be the most technologically advanced carburetors in the industry and maintain a 50 year plus history. The purpose of this blog post is to share why we are so busy supporting racers and street riders with our TT chassis & bodywork kits. We believe that we have really tapped into a value proposition where we can match the "soul" and appearance of these iconic classic racers with the best of modern technology and metallurgy. It appears that we have captured the attention of Ducatisti around the world who have a reverence for this period of Ducati TT Racers.

Historically, the significant gain in power:weight ratios over the Ducati bevel drive racers of the time was achieved by the first TT 2 with Ducati belt driven Pantah engine and raced by Tony Rutter and tuned by Pat Slinn to 4 World Championships in Formula 2. The excitement of racing for me is to witness the technological advances made by each team and manufacturer as they work tirelessly to find ever more performance and greater useable horse-power. In reality, most racers are kit bikes where each race team or builder takes what the factory offers and enhances the machine with their particular "recipe" to enhance stability, power:weight ratios and therefore, improving performance by getting that power to the ground. Shown above is our TT 1000 build that we originally built for the track. However, due to its "modern" levels of performance and "fun factor", we had to wire it for the dual purpose of road and track. The "fun factor" comes from using our Ducati Monster S2R 1000 cc DS engine in one of our chrome-moly TT frames where we have shaved off 50+ pounds of weight over a traditional Monster S2R in a superbly handling machine and with weight reduction that enhances the significant performance from the engine's dual plug, DS heads.

We have all of the bits and expertise to assist you with your build, whatever that may be. The process starts with finding a "good" modern 2 or 3 valve Ducati engine! This can be accomplished by finding a good Ducati donor bike that are still available for a good price. We find that many enthusiasts want a good track day weapon that does not require a "king's ransom" to build or to repair if there is that unfortunate"off". It is our belief that our "formula" is what inspires many racers who are involved in Vintage Motorcycle Racing worldwide to work with us. Additionally, there is also a passion if not an intrigue with these original racing machines that remain so historically significant. Cost effectiveness is possible for our "super bikes" when one can pick up a Ducati Monster or Supersport very inexpensively. Sell off the bits that you do not need and what is left can be used on your TT or F1 build. As shown below, a customer of mine is using the 900 ss engine with BCM 944 cc race kit from this donor bike as I had purchased a very nice used 1000 cc Monster S2R engine for my TT 1000 build. I ended up using the 17" Tecnomagnesio wheel set and wiring loom (harness) from this Pro Thunder racer and made available from Team Wreckless in Phoenix for our build.

At Italianirion.com we can offer our yellow on red TT 2, blue on red TT 1 or silver on red NCR styled bodywork kits now in fiberglass or carbon fiber/gelcoat. We offer hand-made aluminum TT 2 and TT 1 "deep sump" fuel tanks as well as our TT 1000 "shallow sump" fuel tank for use with our modern engines where the carburetors face each other between the cylinder heads as shown below. We have all of the fairing brackets, yoke (triple clamp) options, exhaust systems, rear shocks, swing arms and front forks. We also manufacture clip-on's, engine breather tanks, and offer OEM items such as Domino throttles. We are also a dealer for Brembo and can offer the braking systems for our racers from Ducati bevel drives to the Ducati 996 Superbike.  Do check out our comprehensive portfolio of OEM and newly manufactured bits for your racer or for your TT/F1 street bike at Italianiron.com. Photo albums of our TT racer builds are available for view on my Scot P Wilson/Italian Iron Classics FaceBook page. Additionally, we do offer VIN plates for our frames that can be used by the street rider to aide the licensing and registration process.

Perhaps it is my age of 65 now, however, I am not interested in 200 bhp motorcycles. I do like taking my Ducati 996 rs with Toine Biggelaar tuned engine out on the track even when it wants to "rip my arms out of their socket" with the throttle wide open. Yet I am having a great deal of fun riding my 1980 Ducati 900 ss MHR and now this Ducati TT 1000 up our mountain roads here in the American Southwest. I find the power extremely usable and really enjoy how "flickable" these bikes are. Using our SmartCarb2's bring out the best in performance of these Ducati 2V engines in addition to improving reliability. Call me old fashioned (and I am) but I like racing from the days when the pilot was in control of the machine and not the electronics package. It is my belief that another reason that vintage motorcycle racing is so popular worldwide is that the HP is more than compatible with most skill levels. The key to racing fast in my opinion, and shared by racing mentors of mine, is to be as confident in your set-up as possible. The combination of a professionally set up suspension, light weight chassis, good power delivery and wearing ear plugs (at least for me) makes racing for me and riding a very relaxed and more enjoyable experience.

In addition to our product portfolio for  TT and other Ducati racers, we are also excited to support enthusiasts for Norton Manx, Norton Commando, and other British racers through Molnar Manx and BritIron Classics Norton. We would, therefore, be remiss if we did not mention our extensive portfolio of specialty chrome-moly race frames for the Manx, Seeley and Matchless G50 racers. Shown below is a Molnar Matchless G50 racer that has been raced in the CRMC and Lansdowne with a specialty AMC replica frame and newly manufactured 90 mm bore, 500cc engine and with all of the usual specialty enhancement bits from Molnar Manx and Molnar Precision LTD. At Italianiron and BritIron Classics, we celebrate the significance of many of the world's finest racing machines and celebrating the skills of such racing greats as Tony Rutter and Peter Williams to name a couple through our maintaining a strong inventory of specialty spares to maintain these noble steeds.

At  Italianiron BritIron Classics, we continue to offer quality OEM and newly manufactured engine and chassis bits for ManxCommandoAtlas, Dominator, Vincent and Seeley road and racing motorcycles. As mentioned before, I am currently working to represent our listings in US Dollars and adhering as closely to British Pounds Sterlings (GBP) for items made in the UK. Please contact me with any currency questions. I have tried numerous "Make an Offer" apps but the technology is insufficient. I am happy to accept reasonable offers on any of our used OEM Ducati and OEM Norton items by email. Italianiron7@gmail.com is for Ducati, Italian and Japanese offerings and Britironclassics@gmail.com is for Norton and other British marques. As a result of our offerings, it is our hope to help you to become immersed in the history, the passion and the early technology of these amazing machines. Let us "Fuel Your Race Passions" to keep the sport of Vintage Motorcycle Racing alive and well!!
